Day 4-Religion, Witchcraft and Magic In New England

The Salem Witch Memorial was very interesting.  I enjoy lecturing about this part of history.  In fact, the female residents find this very important because they can sympathize with the women.  They sometimes feel they had been jailed injusticely.   After watching the video about Sarah, Mary and Rebecca, I wondered about the villagers and letting this happen.  Then, I remember certain times in history we, as a society, have done the same thing for example after 9/11 and how Americans were destroying property and beating anyone who looked Middle Eastern.  This aspect has not changed just the time.

I enjoyed going through Rebecca’s house.  I did not realize she was a midwife and she had delivered most of the children of Salem.  Yet, the town’s people were willing to hang Rebecca.  The other men and women, who were accused and later hung, were innocent people who were accused for monetary purposes.

I found the cemetery very interesting. The story of Rebecca’s body secretly removed from the area of the hanging by her men folk was amazing to me.  Rebecca being secretly buried in the family cemetery but yet not marked was another injustice to Rebecca.  I realize her family had to but what a shame.

  1. Isn’t it amazing how the townspeople let that madness continue to the point of hangings? It seems even more bizarre when you think about their Puritan faith. I also found the cemetery poignant. It was peaceful, but shameful at the same time.

  2. Hi Kris,
I still find it unbelievable that this group of Puritans would go that far to hang people on just hear say and not by facts. I too find this bizarre with their faith and morals.
